Steve Hughes named Downtown Citizen of the Year

Steve Hughes accepts the award for Downtown Citizen of the YearElmira Downtown Development awarded former mayor Steve Hughes the Downtown Citizen of the Year award today during the annual meeting held at the Holiday Inn. EDD Director Rick Pirozzolo described Steve's willingness to not only provide ideas but to provide the elbow grease to get them going. Among those ideas that Steve contributed to, was Operation Green Streets, an EDD program to improve the streetscape through the placement of planters and flowers throughout the downtown District.

Norm Ferris accepts the award for the Popcorn Truck Preservation SocietyAlso honored during the annual meeting, the Popcorn Truck Preservation Society received the award for Downtown Volunteers of the Year for their work and dedication in the preservation and operation of the Popcorn Truck- a downtown staple for many years. The Popcorn Truck is always in operation at downtown events, including Wisner Market and Music on the Riverfront, thanks to the hard work of these volunteers.

The Elmira Star-Gazette received the award for Corporate Rick presents the award to Monte TrammerCitizen of the Year for their dedication to looking at the positives and negatives of Downtown Elmira and for the extra push they provided to get everyone thinking about Downtown Elmira.

Accepting the awards for the Popcorn Truck Preservation Society was Norm Ferris and for the Star-Gazette, Monte Trammer.






Elmira Downtown Development is a separate agency from the City of Elmira, but works very closely with City of Elmira staff and departments.
